Local Government Area Survey 2026

Ahead of the 2026 Tasmanian local government elections, Equality Tasmania invites candidates statewide to complete a short survey on LGBTIQA+ equality and inclusion.

Candidates were asked whether they support practical inclusion measures such as flying the pride flag, advisory groups, inclusive services, staff training and public support for trans and gender diverse people, and to share their priority for LGBTIQA+ inclusion.

Responses are published below with each candidate’s permission and updated regularly. Use the search and council filter to find candidates in your area, then select a name to read their full response.

Local government serves every resident. My focus will be on supporting policies that foster inclusion across our community facilities, events, and services. While any decision requires the support of the broader council, I will consistently vote for and champion initiatives that promote safety, respect, and equal access for LGBTIQA+ people in our municipality.

I am already a big supporter of inclusion and speaking up. I plan to continue the same. This, as an example, is a motion I moved at a Council Meeting, and my background comments in 2023.

“That Council consider what potential steps it can take, including and in addition to flying relevant flags on relevant dates, to demonstrate its commitment to inclusion and equality and its support of the LGBTIQA+ community”.

I am aware the council has been approached with a request to fly the LGBTIQA+ flag and this has been discussed. I support this in order to demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and equality. Community Leadership is a very important role of council – whilst I believe the council staff and councillors are aware of the importance of inclusion and equality, I believe our community could benefit and grow in these areas with some leadership from Brighton Council. I have experienced right in front of me hateful and hurtful language and actions – sometimes even from younger people in playgrounds when attending school talks, and very recently, as well as a couple of incidents in our community I am aware of that certainly did not reflect the same values.

The long-term mental health damage this can cause to individuals that are targeted is quite horrific, and I feel we as a council may be able to do more in this space to help promote inclusion and equality in our community.

I am very supportive of the employment positions Brighton Council have that have the direct community connection we see currently and have planned for the future. Often it does not take a lot, or cost a lot, to instigate some small changes that offer positive outcomes, especially for those that have directly suffered as a result of not being included in the past, or who we can avoid having challenges in the future through being leaders in this area now. There are some great things happening in this space in many areas already that we could investigate their levels or success, and maybe look to instigate ourselves – and I would like to see council explore what else it could be doing to support inclusion and equality in our community.

Burnie Council has just passed its first LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Action Plan and is the first Council to do so on the North West Coast. The plan is for five years and sets out practical steps to support a safer, more welcoming and inclusive Burnie. The plan was co-designed with Council's lived experience working group and I was pleased to be a member of that working group. My priority, if re-elected will be to work through the actions in that plan, advocating to Council budget processes for inclusion of the associated actions and ensuring accountability to our community.

Earlier in the year, I put forward a motion to Council to adopt an LGBTIQA+ Action Plan to ensure those in our LGA are treated equally, included and are able to feel safe in Burnie. This action plan passed on the 25th of August 2026, and we are the first NW Council to have an action plan. It could not have been possible without the support of our LGBTIQA+ Action Group committee, our Council staff that worked on our public survey and plan and Rodney Croome. His support and knowledge gave us the tools we needed to get this through.

My priority is that everyone in our community is treated with dignity, respect and acceptance and is free from discrimination.

I strongly support equality. What I do not support is treating any particular group as more entitled to recognition, consideration or support simply because of who they are. My approach is equal treatment, equal opportunity and the same standards for everyone.

I support practical measures such as inclusive services, appropriate staff training, consultation and clear guidelines where they help ensure people are treated fairly.

I answered no to flying Pride flags because I believe the Australian flag should be the flag that represents all of us collectively. The Australian flag is important to me, and I think using separate flags to represent different groups can sometimes create division rather than inclusion. I have no issue with the Pride flag itself, or with it being used for specific events or occasions, but I do not believe it is something Council should adopt as part of its general representation of the community.

I selected “not sure” on Rainbow Tick accreditation because I would want to understand the cost, requirements and practical benefit before supporting it. I’m not going to support something simply for the sake of it. I would want to know that it actually achieves something.

I answered no to a blanket introduction of gender-neutral toilets and change rooms because I think facilities should be considered individually, taking into account privacy, safety, accessibility, available space, cost and genuine need.

I also answered no to Council making public statements supporting trans and gender diverse people. That does not mean I oppose or disrespect trans or gender diverse people. I simply believe equality is best demonstrated through how people are actually treated, rather than through statements or symbolic gestures directed toward particular groups.

On the question asking whether I consider myself an “ally”, I selected “prefer not to say”. I do not see myself as either an ally or an enemy of any group. I support people being treated equally, and I think asking people to place themselves into opposing camps can sometimes create unnecessary division.

My position is straightforward: everyone deserves the same dignity, respect, rights and opportunities, without discrimination and without preferential treatment.

My priority is simple. My deal is I feel every Central Coast resident should be treated fairly, feel safe and welcome in our community, and be able to use council facilities and take part in community life. That includes LGBTIQA+ people.

I’ll listen when someone says they feel unsafe or excluded, or identifies a barrier in a council service or facility. I’ll work towards practical solutions as a team and judge each proposal on what it would achieve, who it would help and what it would cost. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.

Note from the candidate

Pride flags .. I would support everyone being treated with respect and feeling welcome in Central Coast. For proposals such as flying flags (any flags) at council facilities, I’d consider the purpose, location and some sort of policy that can be applied consistently.

Equality Motions .. I am all about equal treatment and respect for all Central Coast residents. I would have to consider any motion on its actual wording, its purpose and what it asks council to do.

Advisory groups.. I’m willing to hear directly from LGBTIQA+ residents about council services and facilities. Whether a new advisory group is needed would depend on what it's trying to do, who it represents and what it would cost.

Action plans .. I’m big on practical steps that address a demonstrated problem. I’d want to see what an action plan proposes, how it fits with council’s existing work, and again the cost before committing to it.

Inclusive services.. Council services are for everyone. If someone faces a real barrier to using them, I want to hear about it and help work on a practical fix.

Staff Training… Paramount that all council staff treating every resident with respect. If there’s a demonstrated gap in how services are delivered, I’d be all over consider some training to address it.

Rainbow tick accreditation… I would hope council services are welcoming and fair to everyone. Before backing an accreditation scheme, I’d want to understand what it requires and whether it would improve residents’ experience of those services.

Gender neutral toilets and changerooms ..

It's a must for council to facilitate designs that give everyone privacy and safe access. But before council spends heavily on new or altered toilets and change rooms, I want to see how "WE" will tackle vandalism and keep facilities clean, functional and properly maintained. Too many public toilets already feel bleak, and sometimes even basic fittings are missing. Let’s look at modern, durable designs that don't feel like prison toilets and clever ways to prevent damage. Then consult the people who use each facility before deciding what to build.

Consult on, and develop, diversity and inclusion guidelines ..

Big fan of hearing from the people who use council facilities, including LGBTIQA+ residents, sporting clubs and other community groups. I’d consider guidelines where they solve a practical problem and give everyone clear, fair access to the facility.

Public statements supporting trans and gender diverse people

…I’ll speak up if trans or gender diverse residents are being treated unfairly in council services or facilities. But I’d need to see the wording and purpose of any proposed public statement before supporting it. Council should speak clearly when it has a reason to and act within its role.

My priority will be to continue to ensure that LGBTIQA+ people are treated with dignity, respect and equality and are able to participate fully in community life in Clarence.

Clarence City Council already has existing policies, practices and initiatives that support inclusion, so my focus will be on building on that work to improve future outcomes.

I support ongoing engagement with LGBTIQA+ people and organisations to identify practical barriers to participation and ensure Council services, facilities, programs and community engagement are genuinely inclusive. I also believe Council has an important role in ensuring its workplaces and public facilities are safe and respectful and that discrimination, harassment and vilification are not tolerated.

Importantly, inclusion should be reflected in the everyday work of Council—how we design facilities, deliver services, communicate with residents, support community organisations and consult on decisions.

My approach is straightforward: everyone who lives, works or participates in community life in Clarence should feel welcome, respected and able to access Council services and opportunities equally.

These are rights, not privileges. I believe our current Greens councillors have worked very well to support LGBTIQA+ inclusion in Clarence, and I would build on that work. As a councillor, I will listen to LGBTIQA+ communities and work with local organisations to ensure their voices are reflected in Council decisions and services. I will support inclusive initiatives and help create safe, welcoming spaces for everyone, including young people. I want Clarence to be a kinder, safer and more welcoming place for everyone.

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am deeply connected to the community and issues we are facing. I am committed to addressing homophobia, transphobia and all forms of discrimination against the community in any way I can.

If elected I will call out discriminatory language and behaviour and will advocate for safety and inclusion across Clarence. I will advocate for a LGBTQIA+ strategy and action plan to be implemented, maintained and resourced to address inclusion currently restricted by economic and social barriers. I will request LGBTQIA+ people and their needs are integrated into the Community Wellbeing plan and for the Council to uphold its commitments to these plans and strategies. I will call for council to better support LGBTQIA+ days and events (such as wear it purple, IDAHOBIT, etc) and would love to see an increase in facilities and support for local youth programs and spaces; which ensure the safety, accessibility and inclusion of all young people. I will also evaluate council funding and allocation and will call for necessary funds to be allocated to support the LGBTQIA+ community.

While I cannot make any promises on successful motions, I will fight for community voice to be heard and respected by Clarence City Council. My one promise is this: If elected, I will always stand up for LGBTQIA+ people, no matter their age, gender, sexuality, religion, or ethnicity. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights, and anything less is a direct failure of the political system and its role to support all people. I will work openly with community and will follow the evidence provided to me. I will not allow the LGBTQIA+ community to be used as a political punching bag any longer.

This election, we have a real opportunity to vote for LGBTQIA+ rights, we can put community voice back into local government, and we can ensure everyone is supported, included, and happy.

I want all people, including LGBTIQA+ residents, to feel safe, welcomed and able to take part in community life. Hobart is a diverse and growing city, and I believe our strength comes from making sure everyone feels they belong.

As a local councillor, I would support community events and festivals that celebrate diversity, work to ensure council facilities and services are welcoming to all residents, and listen to LGBTIQA+ voices when making decisions that affect our community. I would also support initiatives that promote inclusion, reduce bullying and discrimination, and help create safe public spaces for everyone.

In regards to not permitting council facilities to be used – there are restrictions on how far council can go in not allowing public facilities to be used for certain groups when they're publicly available. I would have to seek legal advice on that, and would only be able to oppose such groups using said facilities when the law allows. It's a pain in the proverbial, I know!

Hobart must be a welcoming and tolerant city. I commit wholeheartedly to being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community on council.

This survey feels limiting, because the only free‑text space still forces the answer into one question. Tasmania still struggles with outdated attitudes — in parts of the community and within the systems that shape decision‑making — and that slows progress for everyone, including LGBTIQA+ people.

I understand why terms like “allies” exist, but I don’t think we should need labels to justify treating people with basic respect. Inclusion should be the default, not something that requires a badge.

My focus is on shifting the underlying mindset that keeps Tasmania from moving forward. Until that changes, barriers will continue to exist for LGBTIQA+ people and many others who simply want to feel fully part of community life.

The City of Hobart successfully established an LGBTIQA+ Reference Group, as a result of a motion from a colleague and I. This group guides council inclusion policies, community programs, provides strategic input and feedback on council programs and services. My main priority when it comes to ensuring LGBTIQA+ people in Kingborough are treated equally and are included in community life will be to support programs, initiatives and events that promote the main themes of Kingborough's LGBTIQA+ Action Plan, which are: Greater Understanding, Celebration and Visibility, Feeling Safe, Heard and Having a Supportive Place and Equal Access. I note that the original action plan was dated 2023-2025 and so, as Mayor, I will ensure that progress on the action plan is regularly reviewed and renewed in a timely way. By updating and renewing the plan, it will be an important opportunity for meaningful ongoing conversation with Equality Tasmania and Kingborough Council will stay engaged with LGBTIQA+ people and representative organisations. A city without 'us and them'.

I want everybody in Launceston to feel heard, to feel respected, and to be part of something bigger. The decisions a council makes should be for everybody, and everybody should be able to see themselves in them and have a voice.

Recently, Launceston City council developed its first LGBTIQA+ Action Plan, initiated through a Councillor Notice of Motion, and is currently recruiting an Inclusion Officer within the Community Wellbeing Team. It's committing the council to consult the LGBTIQA+ community, develop an Action Plan, and establish a roundtable of community members and allies.

As a new councillor it will be a focus of mine to work on turning the plan into action: initiatives that increase acceptance, safety and equal access for our LGBTIQA+ community.

I am proud to stand as an ally. As a candidate for Mayor and Councillor, I am committed to listening to and speaking with our LGBTIQA+ community, speaking openly about the issues people face, challenging discrimination, promoting inclusion and celebrating the diversity that makes Launceston a more vibrant city.

My priority would be supporting the delivery of the new LGBTIQA+ Action Plan, including the training signalled in Phase 1. I trust this training will help develop more “upstanders” across Council and our city: people who can recognise discrimination and have the confidence and practical skills to respond safely, support someone being targeted and seek help when needed.

I congratulate the City of Launceston, Councillors (past and present who had input) and everyone from our LGBTIQA+ community who contributed to the Action Plan. It is important work, shaped by people generously sharing their experience, knowledge and hopes for a more inclusive city.

I stand with our LGBTIQA+ community and seek the opportunity to work with others to continue building a city that cares for its people, celebrates its diversity and treats everyone with dignity, kindness and respect.

That means listening to LGBTIQA+ people and organisations, ensuring Council services, facilities, events and public spaces are welcoming and accessible, and addressing barriers to participation where they exist.

I believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, free from discrimination, and to have the opportunity to participate fully in our community. As a Councillor, inclusion, respect and listening to people will continue to guide the decisions I make.

I will be proactive in promoting and celebrating the strength, courage and accomplishments of the LGBTIQA+ Community.

I also know there’s a lot that the LGBTIQA+ community can teach me about how to be a better ally. As a social worker, I work hard on developing skills and values like listening and empathy. I want to be a potent activist in local government, but I will always be ready to listen and learn.

Human rights should be championed and celebrated positively but also with confidence. I’ve no time for bigotry or prejudice (aka ‘culture wars’) and I reject it wherever I see it.

Every LGBTIQA+ person in our community deserves to feel safe, seen, and genuinely at home. Not merely tolerated, but valued.

This is complex work, and I don't claim to have all the answers. I haven't lived these experiences myself, so I'm always learning and that means listening genuinely to LGBTIQA+ residents and standing firmly against discrimination in all its forms.

My priority is to ensure that every person in the West Tamar is treated with dignity, respect and fairness, and has the opportunity to participate fully in community life.

That includes LGBTIQA+ people, just as it includes people of different ages, abilities, cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. I believe good local government should listen to its community, remove genuine barriers to participation where they exist, and provide services fairly and without discrimination.

For me, inclusion means creating a West Tamar where everyone can feel safe, welcome and valued as a member of our community.
