Local Government Area Survey 2026

Ahead of the 2026 Tasmanian local government elections, Equality Tasmania invites candidates statewide to complete a short survey on LGBTIQA+ equality and inclusion.

Candidates were asked whether they support practical inclusion measures such as flying the pride flag, advisory groups, inclusive services, staff training and public support for trans and gender diverse people, and to share their priority for LGBTIQA+ inclusion.

Responses are published below with each candidate’s permission and updated regularly. Use the search and council filter to find candidates in your area, then select a name to read their full response.

Earlier in the year, I put forward a motion to Council to adopt an LGBTIQA+ Action Plan to ensure those in our LGA are treated equally, included and are able to feel safe in Burnie. This action plan passed on the 25th of August 2026, and we are the first NW Council to have an action plan. It could not have been possible without the support of our LGBTIQA+ Action Group committee, our Council staff that worked on our public survey and plan and Rodney Croome. His support and knowledge gave us the tools we needed to get this through.

My priority is inclusion for all – age/ gender status/ abilities, however I recognise that some members need to be overtly consulted to ensure good outcomes for them. My priority is for gender neutral toilets across our community as facilities are updated, as I think they serve all of us better.

As a social worker of 15 years, I am committed to creating safe and inclusive spaces for everyone. To do this genuinely will require consultation with community stakeholders to understand the local issues. My priority will be to continue to ensure that LGBTIQA+ people are treated with dignity, respect and equality and are able to participate fully in community life in Clarence.

Clarence City Council already has existing policies, practices and initiatives that support inclusion, so my focus will be on building on that work to improve future outcomes.

I support ongoing engagement with LGBTIQA+ people and organisations to identify practical barriers to participation and ensure Council services, facilities, programs and community engagement are genuinely inclusive. I also believe Council has an important role in ensuring its workplaces and public facilities are safe and respectful and that discrimination, harassment and vilification are not tolerated.

Importantly, inclusion should be reflected in the everyday work of Council—how we design facilities, deliver services, communicate with residents, support community organisations and consult on decisions.

My approach is straightforward: everyone who lives, works or participates in community life in Clarence should feel welcome, respected and able to access Council services and opportunities equally.

My priority will be making sure LGBTIQA+ people feel safe, respected, welcome and genuinely included in community life. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, to feel free to be themselves and to participate in community life without fear of discrimination or exclusion. These are rights, not privileges. I believe our current Greens councillors have worked very well to support LGBTIQA+ inclusion in Clarence, and I would build on that work. As a councillor, I will listen to LGBTIQA+ communities and work with local organisations to ensure their voices are reflected in Council decisions and services. I will support inclusive initiatives and help create safe, welcoming spaces for everyone, including young people. I want Clarence to be a kinder, safer and more welcoming place for everyone.

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am deeply connected to the community and issues we are facing. I am committed to addressing homophobia, transphobia and all forms of discrimination against the community in any way I can.

If elected I will call out discriminatory language and behaviour and will advocate for safety and inclusion across Clarence. I will advocate for a LGBTQIA+ strategy and action plan to be implemented, maintained and resourced to address inclusion currently restricted by economic and social barriers. I will request LGBTQIA+ people and their needs are integrated into the Community Wellbeing plan and for the Council to uphold its commitments to these plans and strategies. I will call for council to better support LGBTQIA+ days and events (such as wear it purple, IDAHOBIT, etc) and would love to see an increase in facilities and support for local youth programs and spaces; which ensure the safety, accessibility and inclusion of all young people. I will also evaluate council funding and allocation and will call for necessary funds to be allocated to support the LGBTQIA+ community.

While I cannot make any promises on successful motions, I will fight for community voice to be heard and respected by Clarence City Council. My one promise is this: If elected, I will always stand up for LGBTQIA+ people, no matter their age, gender, sexuality, religion, or ethnicity. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights, and anything less is a direct failure of the political system and its role to support all people. I will work openly with community and will follow the evidence provided to me. I will not allow the LGBTQIA+ community to be used as a political punching bag any longer.

This election, we have a real opportunity to vote for LGBTQIA+ rights, we can put community voice back into local government, and we can ensure everyone is supported, included, and happy.

I want all people, including LGBTIQA+ residents, to feel safe, welcomed and able to take part in community life. Hobart is a diverse and growing city, and I believe our strength comes from making sure everyone feels they belong.

As a local councillor, I would support community events and festivals that celebrate diversity, work to ensure council facilities and services are welcoming to all residents, and listen to LGBTIQA+ voices when making decisions that affect our community. I would also support initiatives that promote inclusion, reduce bullying and discrimination, and help create safe public spaces for everyone.

For me, it comes down to a simple value: treat others the way you'd want your own family to be treated. I want Hobart to be a city where every person feels respected, valued and able to contribute to community life.

In regards to not permitting council facilities to be used – there are restrictions on how far council can go in not allowing public facilities to be used for certain groups when they're publicly available. I would have to seek legal advice on that, and would only be able to oppose such groups using said facilities when the law allows. It's a pain in the proverbial, I know!

Hobart must be a welcoming and tolerant city. I commit wholeheartedly to being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community on council.

A city without 'us and them'.

I want everybody in Launceston to feel heard, to feel respected, and to be part of something bigger. The decisions a council makes should be for everybody, and everybody should be able to see themselves in them and have a voice.

Recently, Launceston City council developed its first LGBTIQA+ Action Plan, initiated through a Councillor Notice of Motion, and is currently recruiting an Inclusion Officer within the Community Wellbeing Team. It's committing the council to consult the LGBTIQA+ community, develop an Action Plan, and establish a roundtable of community members and allies.

As a new councillor it will be a focus of mine to work on turning the plan into action: initiatives that increase acceptance, safety and equal access for our LGBTIQA+ community.

My priority would be to ensure that LGBTIQA+ people feel safe, respected, valued and included in all aspects of community life. Local government should be a place where everyone is treated equally and has the same opportunity to participate.

I would support inclusive council policies, services and community events, while also listening directly to LGBTIQA+ residents and local organisations about the issues that matter to them. I would also work to ensure our public spaces, facilities and community activities are welcoming and accessible to everyone.

Most importantly, I believe inclusion should be practical and ongoing, not just something we talk about. Everyone in our community deserves to feel that they belong and that their voice is heard.

My view is simple: consenting adults should be free to live and love as they choose. I have family members and employees from diverse backgrounds, and I've always believed that a person's sexuality or gender identity should not determine how they are treated.

As Deputy Mayor, my priority is ensuring every resident is treated fairly, respectfully and has the same opportunity to participate in community life. I want Sorell to be a welcoming and inclusive community where people are judged by their character and contribution, not by labels.

This is complex work, and I don't claim to have all the answers. I haven't lived these experiences myself, so I'm always learning and that means listening genuinely to LGBTIQA+ residents and standing firmly against discrimination in all its forms.

My priority is to ensure that every person in the West Tamar is treated with dignity, respect and fairness, and has the opportunity to participate fully in community life.

That includes LGBTIQA+ people, just as it includes people of different ages, abilities, cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. I believe good local government should listen to its community, remove genuine barriers to participation where they exist, and provide services fairly and without discrimination.

For me, inclusion means creating a West Tamar where everyone can feel safe, welcome and valued as a member of our community.
