Tasmania’s conversion ban has passed the Lower House of State Parliament.

Dear Legislative Councillor,

The current bill to prohibit conversion practices has received support across all three parties and cross-bench independents.

This is because it is based on survivor experience, expert opinion and interstate precedent, and because it was debated, examined and improved by amendments in the Lower House.

The bill is a balanced, moderate response to the persistence of conversion practices and the harm they inflict

1 in 20 LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians are survivors and they have high rates of PTSD and attempted suicide.

Under the bill, doctors will be free to treat patients as long as that treatment is within existing clinical guidelines.

People of faith will be free to preach and pray, and parents will be free to guide their children, as long as they are not pushing or inflicting conversion practices.

Experience in the five other states and territories with conversion bans shows that none of the predicted “unintended consequences” have come to pass.

The Lower House voted down amendments that would have allowed conversion practices and the harm they inflict to continue.

It also voted down a further inquiry because it is not necessary and could be a platform for further misinformation.

I urge you to vote for the bill, against amendments that weaken it, and against further delays.
