Dear Tasmanian Upper House member,
I urge you to vote for the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2026.
The Bill will save lives. 1 in 20 LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians are conversion survivors and they have high levels of PTSD and attempted suicide.
The Bill will bring us in line with most other states and territories and stop Tasmania from becoming a haven for these cruel practices.
It will send a clear message that LGBTIQA+ people are not broken and do not need to be fixed.
It will end practices that fraudulently pose as “therapies” even though they don’t work, are based in pseudo-science, are typically inflicted by people without qualifications and cause deep harm.
The Bill’s scheme for educating the public education
I urge you not to be distracted by the fear campaign against the Bill.
The Bill is not radical. It is based on similar legislation interstate where none of the “unintended consequences” predicted in Tasmania have come to pass.
In Tasmania, doctors will be free to treat patients as long as that treatment is within existing clinical guidelines.
People of faith will be free to preach and pray, and parents will be free to guide their children, as long as they are not pushing or inflicting conversion practices.
Exempting conversion practices if the victim volunteers misunderstands that these practices never come with warnings about their futility, the pseudo-science they are based on or the damage they inflict.
Informed consent to these inherently deceptive practices is impossible.
The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute, the Tasmanian branch of the AMA, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Uniting Church and every reputable health organisation that made submissions to the TLRI’s inquiry in 2022 support banning conversion practices.
This Bill is the best chance for that to happen before another life is lost.
